OneMeta MDR

A growing emphasis on standardizing shareable information assets as well as promoting both internal and external data interchange, is driving organizations to focus on their information architecture strategy.

Considering the wide spectrum of shareable information, one viable approach to supporting information architecture is the creation of a central repository - or a "virtual" central portal - which accounts for definitions, values (in some cases), and the change management processes around the quality of information being maintained. An alternative to creating a central repository, however, is to create a central metadata registry - which provides organizations a structured framework for data management, and also addresses the diversity inherent in shareable data assets.

OneMeta MDR is the first - and currently - the only packaged (COTS) software available that provides a ready-to-use enterprise metadata registry based on the ISO/IEC 11179 standard. While OneMeta MDR is fully compliant with ISO 11179, it can also be extended and configured (without any programming effort), to meet specific requirements your organization may have that vary from the 11179 standard. Additionally, it provides a strategic architectural framework that that will provide the foundation for future data management needs. It is fully browser-based and designed to be used by both business/functional users and technical staff.

ISO 11179 is a flexible yet complex standard - that oft times can be a very daunting and frustrating to understand at first glance. Most end-users are intimidated by the models' complexity and their anxieties sometimes out weigh the perceived benefits of deploying the registry standard. Yet, when successfully implemented, ISO 11179 strongly supports data classification, registration and the creation of a fundamental enterprise standard business layer. With OneMeta MDR, we have created different business views depending on the audience to make ISO 11179 easier to understand and adopt.

OneMeta MDR

An increasing number of organizations have chosen to embrace ISO 11179's ability to support metadata driven standards in complex computing environments, providing a highly comprehensive structure for creating exact data definitions. The ISO/IEC 11179 model, in fact, has become one of the most widely used standards for metadata registries, facilitating resolutions to any number of challenges faced during the process of building a metadata registry.

In addition to business metadata, OneMeta MDR has been extended to consolidate technical metadata providing a high performance, integrated solution that will retrieve, consolidate, extend, relate, report and analyze metadata from current repositories. The solution's support for automatic analyses and mining of technical metadata and linkages to created business standards, significantly reduces the time typically required to link different metadata assets, as well as empowering governance teams to successfully assess impact of change as the standard evolves.

Salient points of OneMeta MDR 11179 include:

  • Underlying ISO/IEC 11179-compliant data model, with all the data management utilities of OneData enhanced with ISO 11179-specific functionality, including import of Administered Items, Permissible Values, Value Meanings and Classification Schemes. It is further customizable by adding your own attributes.
  • The standard-aware rules engine and presentation layer ensures continued compliance to the ISO/IEC 11179 standard.
  • Built-in governance and registration processes as prescribed in Part 6 of the ISO standard.
  • Configuration options for taxonomy constructs with Classification Scheme Items. Canonical message format generation with CSI node as anchor-point.
  • Consolidate your existing metadata assets, with automatic/manual match to the standard using the optional MetaMap component.
  • Custom extensions to the core model, functionality and presentation layer all make for a more comprehensive solution; custom extensions include physical metadata constructs (e.g. data dictionaries) and language extensions such as Value Meaning language variations.
  • Extend usage beyond a metadata registry into Reference Data and Master Data management, using the same platform, by extending the meta-model, the application and repository.
  • Strong stewardship and security controls; customizable change request and change approval processes as needed.
  • Extranet access, to facilitate data exchange and wider access to external partners.
  • Various means of data interchange including Web Services, JMS messaging, and FTP.
  • Provides a presentational layer designed to hide 11179's complexities from business users.

The benefits of OneMeta MDR as a metadata registry are numerous:

  • Provides the mechanisms for enabling global data acquisition and interchange, particularly across application areas. Data definitions and descriptions are precise to support reuse or multiple users of data.
  • Documentation of data characteristics fully supporting automated sharing of data, including locating, retrieving, and exchanging data.
  • Provides uniform guidance for identification, development, and description of elements and domains.
  • Provides universal means for organizing standard shareable elements thereby facilitating search, retrieval and optimal usage.
  • Ability to manage content, taxonomies and information resources in one central repository.
  • Sets up common data standards between organizations. Exchange of data among organizations is facilitated with the common data standards.
  • Different presentation layers based on the audience for quicker and easier adoption of a standards layer.
