OneData MDR with 'Lite' Model

The OneData MDR 'Lite' implementation is a model that has been derived from various industry standards for metadata registries. It focuses on simplifying the management of the data registry model and offering end users an easy-to-use, configurable interface.

The 'Lite' model is a starting point for organizations which have decided on implementing a metadata registry, but are not sure of the standard/model to use for the metadata registry. The 'Lite' model aids in quickly implementing the metadata registry. The physical entities in the underlying database conform to the objects in the application (unlike ISO 11179 where everything is an administered item).

The physical model for the metadata registry makes it easier for the administrators to extend the meta model with specific attributes for specific entities. For Example: If the Data Element Concepts needs an extra attribute for keeping a short name, it can be easily added to the physical entity for Data Element Concept without having any impact on the Value Domain or Context.

The MDR Lite model also allows the extension of the Meta model to add specific entities that might be relevant to the enterprise. Additional entities/relationships can be added without impacting any of the underlying structures and rules.

Benefits of using the Lite Model

  • Simpler model to make it easier for stewards to maintain the data.
  • Intuitive model is physically implemented the same way as in the application.
  • Workflow, Statuses, Owners are clearly identified.

Rules

The rules used in the 'Lite' model are derived from the ISO rules. The rules can be divided into

1. Data Rules

2. Status Rules

Processes

The process of managing the various entries are similar to the ISO standard, but since there is no concept of an administered item, the user maintains the data in the entity that manages the data. For example: if a new Value Domain is to be created, the user goes to the Value Domain object and inserts a new value.

However, even though the data is managed in various objects, the process for submission and checking remains quite rigorous. A new entry goes through the various statuses of Candidate -> Recorded -> Qualified -> Standard -> Retired.
